English sparkling wine Nyetimber has beaten the likes of Bollinger and Louis Roederer to be named Champion of Worldwide Sparking Wines at an Italian competition reports Decanter.

Nyetimber’s Classic Cuvée 2003, which costs around £25, came top in the blind tasting at the Bollicine del Mondo competition in Verona, run by Italian wine magazine Euposia.

The best of Wine Spectator in 2009 <link>

It’s all there in one article. Make sure you read the one about how red wine improves your sex life and the Californian Pinot tasting.

“Hidden Treasures”. The Sydney Morning Herald identifies 10 wineries from off the beaten track here. The introdution also proves the 80:20 rule.

“There are 2300 wineries in Australia with 1600 cellar doors and yet the top 20 wineries account for 80 per cent of all wine sales.”

Geoff Weaver is the only winery I’m familiar with. I’ll be looking out for the others.

VisitLondon gives their views on the top London wine bars in this article <link>. They recommend the Cork & Bottle, run by Don Hewitson which is just around the corner from work. I’ve been meaning to visit this place. I’m definitely going to have to now.

As we holiday in Northwest Tuscany  fairly regularly (but outside the Chianti region) and we’re off there again in a month, this article by Jancis Robinson in the FT on Chianti caught my eye. <link>

Apparently, this is the first year that “white wine grapes have been outlawed” from the making of Chianti Classico.  Up until 2006, Chianti was a blend of white (mostly Trebbiano) and red (mostly Sangiovese) grapes. I knew white grapes were used in Rhone wines but didn’t realise they were used in Chianti.

I really recommend the article and the column. It’s always a very good read. Here’s Jancis’ list of recommended 2006 Classicos.

Taste of Tuscany: Classic Classicos

●Badia a Coltibuono
●Carpineto (£)
●Collelungo (£)
Principe Corsini, Le Corte (£)
San Fabiano Calcinaia
●Villa Calcinaia

●Castello di Ama
●Castello di Meleto (£)
●Casanuova di Nittardi

●Il Poggiolino (£)

●denotes a particularly traditional, lively style
(£) denotes especially good value
