au bon climat

Jancis Robinson named the Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir 2007 Santa Maria Valley her wine of the week here <link>.

She writes, “ABC’s  ‘basic’ Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir 2007 Santa Maria Valley, which Rick Kinzbrunner of Giacaonda and I agreed was the most beguiling Pinot Noir of all those they showed, which included several much smarter and more expensive 2006s.”

“…In the US, Easy Beach Wine have it at $20.99 while in Germany K&U are listing it at €19.80.”

Don’t worry about Mr Parker.  Listen to Jancis Robinson and Simon Staples, Berry Bros, review 2008 Bordeaux here <link>. They’ll tell you all you need to know.

“Who would have thought that after months of continuous bad weather and set-backs in the vineyards, and weeks of speculation about the quality of the wines, that we would actually come away with anything better than mediocre praise for these specimens?  But there’s no denying that many of the wines surpassed our expectations (though it must be said that many didn’t).”

Viognier is one of my favourite grapes. Here’s Jancis’ recent article on the grape <link> and here is her list of some top wines.

Some top wines:
Cuilleron – Les Chaillets
Guigal – La Doriane
Vernay – Coteau de Vernon
Villard – Terrasses du Pilat
Alban – Edna Valley
Yalumba – The Virgilius

It is pleasing to read that:

“Condrieu has, fortunately, been experiencing a revival and injection of real winemaking ambition so that old names such as Vernay have been revived and relative newcomers such as Cuilleron, Gangloff, Niero and Villard have contributed to an overall raising of standards. Furthermore, attention and investment from such quality-conscious merchants as Guigal and Delas has resulted in some superb bottlings, of which Guigal’s La Doriane has a particular following.”

My pre-wine, wine, wine post on the 2006 Verite from Laurent Miquel is here <link>. I’m still buying and drinking this wine. It’s great value.

Thanks Jancis.

As we holiday in Northwest Tuscany  fairly regularly (but outside the Chianti region) and we’re off there again in a month, this article by Jancis Robinson in the FT on Chianti caught my eye. <link>

Apparently, this is the first year that “white wine grapes have been outlawed” from the making of Chianti Classico.  Up until 2006, Chianti was a blend of white (mostly Trebbiano) and red (mostly Sangiovese) grapes. I knew white grapes were used in Rhone wines but didn’t realise they were used in Chianti.

I really recommend the article and the column. It’s always a very good read. Here’s Jancis’ list of recommended 2006 Classicos.
